Abstract:

"The beauty and inspiration of music must not be restricted to a privileged few, but made available to every man, woman, and child."--Leopold Stokowski, 1940. "Perhaps Bach and Beethoven are strange bedfellows for Mickey Mouse, but it's all been a lot of fun." - Walt Disney, 1940. These quotations preface the "Making of" documentary that accompanies this 60th Anniversary edition of "Fantasia." This is the original uncut version of the groundbreaking film, conceived of as a new type of concert, wherein magnificent music is married with classic Disney animation, resulting in an extraordinary entertainment. The film features a host of unforgettable images, including Mickey Mouse as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and the "Dance of the Hours" as performed by a corp de ballet of ostrich, elephant, and hippopotami.
