Despite a few historical inaccuracies and occasionally anachronistic dialog, this is a witty and enjoyable play with many memorable one-liners. Set at Henry's Christmas Court in Chinon 1183 during the young king of France's first official visit, much of the play is a verbal duel between King Henry and his estranged wife Queen Eleanor. O'Toole and Hepburn are well-matched in this production. Hepburn won a second Best Actress Oscar for her role; O'Toole was nominated for Best Actor but did not win. Even the lesser roles are expertly played by now-familiar British actors (Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton, among others). All in all, a delightful film, superbly acted and tightly directed, with a magnificent musical score.
